Reviewer: Don

I'm a big fan of Booyah's buzzbaits but this is the first time in a while I have tried one of their spinnerbaits. When I first read about this spinnerbait I was instantly enthralled with its potential. I love fishing for smallmouth bass and one of the baits I like to use the most is a spinnerbait. A spinnerbait is one of my favorite search baits for river smallies as well as river largemouth bass. I found spinnerbaits to be great at provoking reaction strikes but sometimes not so great for landing smallies. Smallmouth bass are scrappy fighters and are notorious for throwing baits. I think that Booyah's patented flexible hook system would be absolutely perfect for landing more smallmouth bass.

Background

Booyah Bait Co. is a well known bait company with a history of producing some great baits. If you're anything like me, then chances are you have used at least one Booyah bait with positive results in your lifetime. Booyah is best known for their spinnerbaits, Jigs, and Buzzbaits. Booyah says that "each BOOYAH bait is made the way you would make 'em, with a level of craftsmanship second to none." I don't know about all of that but i'd have to say they're pretty close.

Out of the box this spinnerbait looks really sweet! Booyah's paint jobs on their baits usually look pretty good and this spinnerbait is no exception. The engraved scales and flared gills are a nice touch that I didn't expect. The skirt looks like it's attached evenly and looks awesome too! This spinnerbait needed no tuning out of the package which isn't always the case with Booyah's baits.

(This is an awesome looking spinnerbait in my opinion)

Upon first inspection of this bait it's easy for me to say that I was thoroughly impressed with everything about this spinnerbait except the price. To me the extra buck or two is worth it because this thing has got river smallmouth and largemouth bass written all over it! I truly haven't been this excited to use a spinnerbait since the Terminator T1 spinnerbait first came out.

This spinnerbait offers a few innovative features that I find very attractive and very useful for the type of river fishing I like to do. This spinnerbait not only has great features but it looks good as well. I love Booyah's Glimmer Shad color and the bass do as well! This color is one of my favorite colors that any bait company has to offer. It seems to accentuate some of the design features well and it does glimmer quite nicely. The head of this spinnerbait looks great with its engraved scales, flared red gills, and sunken-in 3D red eyes.

(The Glimmer Shad color really looks great)

A spinnerbait just isn't a spinnerbait without its blades but these blades aren't your typical spinnerbait's willow blades. No my friends, these blades are quite different because they counter rotate. These counter rotating nickel and gold plated blades will help scatter more light in different directions hopefully attracting the attention of a fish in this bait's vicinity. The reason why these blades counter rotate is a very simple one. So simple in fact that I can't believe someone didn't think of this before Booyah got the patent (unless it's an older patent).

It seems to me that these blades counter rotate because of where the holes are drilled on each blade. Each blade has a hole that is drilled just off center. The hole on the upper blade is drilled slightly off center to the left while the lower (larger) blade is drilled more off center than the upper blade to the right. Each blade will naturally spin the direction of least resistance and there we have our counter rotating willow blades.

(Check out the placement of each hole, the bottom one is more noticable)

This spinnerbait has a Weight Backward head design that distributes this spinnerbait's weight more toward the hook. The weighted body of this spinnerbait is somewhat elongated past the point where the skirt attaches. There is also a bit of weight attached where this spinnerbait's hook attaches to the flexible wire. This feature was designed to keep this bait from rolling over during fast retrieves. The Weight Backward design also helps keep this bait's 3/8 oz. of weight in the frame and profile of a 1/4 oz. spinnerbait. This spinnerbait's Weight Backward head design is built for speed!

(The weight-backward head design)

This spinnerbait's flexible hook system is what made me want to purchase and review this bait. Booyah's flexible hook system is all about leverage. The flexible steel wire will go a long way in helping to absorb a fish's effort to throw this spinnerbait's hook. This spinnerbait's hook is attached by what appears to be a steel cable wire instead a plain old shank. There's nothing wrong with the plain old shank but I have to tell you that I wish I had this spinnerbait last year. After a few smallies throw a spinnerbait back in your face you quickly learn to appreciate an innovative design such as this!

(This steel cable is not too hard to bend and not too easy either. It feels just right)

I am getting the feeling that I am going to love useing this spinnerbait; let's put it to the test!

At 3/8 of an ounce, this spinnerbait casts very well. I will use a trailer hook on my spinnerbaits on occasion, but I do not see myself ever having to use one on this spinnerbait. I have noticed an increased hook-up ration when using the Booyah HD Spinnerbait as opposed to my other spinnerbaits.

(The Booyah HD Spinnerbait casts like a bullet; you can get some real distance with this bait!)

No matter how fast I cranked, I have not had any problems with the Booyah HD Spinnerbait rolling during the retrieve. I was able to burn this bait near the surface at lightning speed without fear of the bait doing a barrel roll. Burning spinnerbaits at the surface is a fun technique for bagging a few smallies, but in my opinion, most spinnerbaits do not perform nearly as well at this task as the Booyah HD spinnerbait.

(The Booyah HD Spinnerbait is a great bait for burning)

Being a smallmouth bass fanatic has its ups and downs; one of the "downs" is that you are probably going to have a lot of your lures thrown back at you by ferocious river smallies. I am extremely happy to report that the Booyah HD Spinnerbait's flexible hook system works like a charm! I have noticed that once hooked, smallies caught on the Booyah HD Spinnerbait have a very difficult time throwing this bait when compared to my other spinnerbaits. If you are a smallie fanatic like I am, I strongly urge you to consider stop reading this article right now, get in your car, drive to your local sporting goods store, and buy this bait for your next smallie expedition!

(The Booyah HD Spinnerbait did an awesome job at resisting this river smallie's violent attempts at throwing the bait!)

During the course of our review of the Booyah HD Spinnerbait, and after banging several river smallies and bucketmouths, we have not had a single bass throw this hook! This spinnerbait is an all-star performer!

I am happy to report that the Booyah HD Spinnerbait has held up fairly well during the course of our review. Several largemouth and smallmouth bass later, our Booyah HD Spinnerbait has suffered some minor paint chipping. We didn't have any problems with the wire deforming after big strikes; this is a well made bait!

(Some minor battle scars)

After several months of use, our spinnerbait’s skirt is starting to lose some strands and is becoming a little shredded. The skirt has also become permanently stained from the stained waters I tend to fish in. Overall, I am impressed with this spinnerbait’s durability.

(The skirt is now light brown... yeah.)

At $7, the Booyah HD Spinnerbait is just a tad on the expensive side. You do get some very innovative features for the few extra dollars that you have to spend to obtain this little gem. To be honest, I would happily buy this spinnerbait simply for the flexible hook system! The great choice of colors, the weight-backward head design, and the counter rotating blades are also very welcome design features for the money.

I believe that the Booyah HD Spinnerbait gives youa lot of bait for your hard-earned money. I for one think that this bait is worth every penny.
